The emergency service will assist travellers facing breakdowns, medical emergencies, food and shelter needs on alternative routes through Ukhrul and Kamjong
Ukhrul: The Tangkhul Naga Long Working Committee (TNL-WC) has launched a round-the-clock emergency helpline to assist travellers facing difficulties on alternative routes through Ukhrul and Kamjong amid the ongoing conflict and heavy monsoon rains.
The helpline, Yarui I (9612744804) and Yarui II (9862144506), will provide assistance during vehicle breakdowns, medical emergencies and situations requiring food, shelter or route guidance.
The initiative comes after the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, imposed an indefinite shutdown from midnight on August 5. The committee accused the Manipur government of “complete inaction” despite weeks of protests and a 48-hour ultimatum over what it described as a “selective economic blockade” against the Kuki community.
In its statement, the TNL-WC said conflict and heavy rainfall had made alternative hill routes increasingly hazardous for commuters from Manipur and neighbouring states. Volunteers will remain available around the clock to assist stranded or distressed travellers.
Meanwhile, civil rights activists Ashang Kasar and Paul Chawang of Youth Rise for Change visited Liangmai Naga Taphou village on Friday and held discussions with youth and women leaders and village authorities on the prevailing security situation.
The village has maintained round-the-clock checkpoints amid the conflict. The activists urged residents to remain united, protect their land and pursue justice through peaceful and lawful means.
