Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam worsened, with the state recording its first flood-related death of the season as nearly 47,000 people remained affected across six districts amid continuous rainfall and rising river levels.

According to the latest flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a woman lost her life after being swept away by floodwaters at Sissiborgaon in Dhemaji district.

ASDMA reported that 46,938 people have been affected across 221 villages in 10 revenue circles covering Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur and Biswanath districts. Dhemaji remains the worst-hit district, accounting for 45,841 affected residents.

Floodwaters have submerged around 3,809.8 hectares of agricultural land, causing extensive damage to standing crops and disrupting livelihoods. The Brahmaputra and Disang rivers are flowing above the danger level, while roads and public infrastructure have also suffered damage in several affected areas.

Relief and rescue operations are underway across the affected districts. Four relief camps are currently sheltering more than 450 displaced people, while six relief distribution centres have been set up to provide food, drinking water and other essential supplies. The floods have also affected more than 88,000 livestock, adding to the challenges faced by flood-hit communities.

Authorities are continuing rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts while closely monitoring river levels, urging residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert as the flood situation remains critical.
