Japan PM Sanae Takaichi Begins Landmark India Visit to Deepen Strategic Partnership

Takaichi begins her first official visit to India, with economic security, technology, Indo-Pacific cooperation and investment expected to dominate bilateral talks

New Delhi: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday, July 1, for a three-day official visit to India, marking her first visit to the country as Prime Minister and her first-ever trip to India.

Takaichi was received at the airport by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh. During her visit, she will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit.

Announcing her arrival, Takaichi posted, “I have arrived in Delhi, the capital of India. As Prime Minister of Japan, this will be my first visit to India in about three years, and personally, my very first time visiting the country.”

The Japan PM said the discussions would focus on urgent issues, including economic security and energy security, with the aim of deepening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, promoting mutually complementary cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties amid the evolving global situation.

Welcoming the Japanese Prime Minister, Modi posted, “A very warm welcome to India, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. We are delighted to host you on your first visit to India and I look forward to our wide-ranging discussions tomorrow that will further deepen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.”

The summit is expected to cover cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, supply chains and clean energy.

More than 150 Japanese business leaders are also participating in an investment forum aimed at expanding economic collaboration, with new agreements on emerging technologies and economic security likely to be discussed.
