Authorities urge residents in vulnerable hill areas to stay alert as heavy monsoon rains raise the risk of landslides across Kamrup Metropolitan district

Guwahati: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has identified 366 landslide-prone locations across Kamrup Metropolitan district, raising concerns over public safety as heavy monsoon rains continue to lash Guwahati and surrounding areas.
According to officials, the vulnerable sites are spread across hilly and environmentally sensitive areas that have experienced landslides or ground instability in the past. Many of these locations are situated along hill slopes, excavation zones and rapidly urbanising neighbourhoods, where increased human activity has heightened the risk of slope failures.
The list was prepared following detailed field inspections, a review of previous landslide incidents and assessments of terrain and geographical risk factors. ASDMA has urged residents living in these areas to remain vigilant throughout the monsoon and immediately report any signs of impending landslides to the authorities.
People have been advised to watch for warning indicators such as cracks in the ground or buildings, leaning trees or electric poles, unusual water seepage from hillsides and sudden soil movement, all of which could signal an imminent landslide.
Guwahati has witnessed several rain-triggered landslides in recent years, resulting in fatalities, property damage and disruption to daily life. Experts have attributed the rising frequency of such incidents to unplanned urban expansion, indiscriminate hill cutting, deforestation and increasing pressure on fragile hill ecosystems.
Authorities have appealed to residents to follow safety advisories, remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall and cooperate with disaster management agencies to minimise risks during the ongoing monsoon season.
