DDMA Issues Alert As 7 Gates of Khandong Reservoir Opened Amid Rising Water Levels

Residents along the Kapili River and downstream areas have been urged to stay alert as authorities begin phased water release from the reservoir following heavy rainfall

Guwahati: The Dima Hasao District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has sounded an alert for communities located along the Kapili River after seven gates of the Khandong Reservoir were opened to regulate rising water levels triggered by persistent rainfall.

Officials said water is being discharged through the reservoir’s spillway gates in a phased manner to maintain structural safety and manage inflow. In view of the increased downstream flow, residents have been advised to exercise caution and avoid entering the river or engaging in any water-related activities.

The administration has also urged people living near the riverbanks to shift livestock, vehicles and other valuables to safer locations as a precautionary measure.

In its advisory, the DDMA requested citizens to closely monitor official updates regarding gate operations and water discharge volumes through authorised mobile and WhatsApp communication channels.

Authorities further noted that the volume of water flowing downstream towards Lanka will also depend on gate operations at the Lower Kopili Hydro Electric Project (LKHEP).

To strengthen emergency preparedness, the District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) has activated its helpline services and remains on standby to respond to any untoward situation.

The advisory comes amid ongoing monsoon conditions, with district authorities appealing for public cooperation and strict adherence to safety instructions to minimise risks during the period of water release.
