The centres would be fully funded by the foundation and operated under the supervision of the Assam Forest Department
Guwahati: The Vantara Foundation has proposed establishing three Wild Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centres in Assam at its own cost, including a dedicated facility for the conservation and care of Asian elephants.
Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said on World Elephant Day that the state Forest Department had received the proposal from the foundation, founded by Anant Ambani. He said the proposal was being examined by the government and welcomed the initiative
According to the proposal, all three centres would operate under the supervision of the Assam government. One centre would focus exclusively on Asian elephants and include a veterinary hospital, diagnostic facilities, specialised enclosures, medical and nutritional centres and other species-specific care facilities.
The centres would support the rescue, rehabilitation and welfare of wild animals, with their locations and configurations to be finalised in consultation with the Forest Department.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed appreciation for the proposal, saying projects aimed at strengthening wildlife conservation and Assam’s natural heritage deserved serious consideration.
The foundation has proposed handing over the completed facilities to the state government without any encumbrances.
