Several EU Nations Ease Travel Restrictions to Assam Following Diplomatic Outreach

Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah says revised advisories by several European countries signal growing global trust in Assam, boosting prospects for tourism, investment and cultural exchange

Guwahati: Assam has received a significant boost to its global image, with several European Union member states joining Australia and Japan in easing travel restrictions for their citizens visiting most parts of the state.

Sharing the development on Sunday, Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah described it as a reflection of the state’s changing narrative and growing international credibility. “From conflict headlines to global confidence, Assam’s tourism story is entering a new chapter,” he said.

The minister noted that for decades, Assam and the wider Northeast were often viewed through the lens of insurgency and instability despite their rich cultural heritage, biodiversity and tourism potential. However, sustained diplomatic engagement and international outreach have helped reshape those perceptions.

Mallabaruah credited the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and initiatives such as Advantage Assam for strengthening ties with global stakeholders. He also highlighted the recent visit of European Union diplomats and interactions with international representatives as key factors behind the policy shift.

The relaxation of travel advisories is expected to encourage higher tourist inflows from Europe while creating fresh opportunities for local businesses, guides, homestays and the hospitality sector. The Chief Minister has also indicated that the development could accelerate the growth of village tourism across Assam.

“A stronger global confidence in Assam today will translate into greater tourism growth, investment and economic opportunities tomorrow,” Mallabaruah said.
