Zubeen Garg Case: Shyamkanu Mahanta Moves Supreme Court After Gauhati HC Denies Bail

Bail plea of key accused to be heard by apex court on Tuesday; trial proceedings continue as multiple accused remain in judicial custody

Guwahati: The legal battle in the high-profile Zubeen Garg case has reached the Supreme Court, with key accused Shyamkanu Mahanta challenging the Gauhati High Court’s refusal to grant him bail.

Sources said Mahanta has filed a special petition before the apex court seeking relief. The matter has been listed for hearing on Tuesday, marking the latest development in a case that continues to attract widespread attention across Assam.

Earlier, the Gauhati High Court had heard detailed submissions from both sides before declining Mahanta’s bail request. The plea was argued before Justice Mitali Thakuria, with the defence seeking his release while Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia opposed the application on behalf of the prosecution.

Meanwhile, proceedings in the trial court continue. A Special Fast Track Court recently rejected the bail applications of four other accused, Sandipan Garg, Amritprabha Mahanta, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya directing that they remain in judicial custody pending the completion of the trial.

The case relates to the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in September 2025 and remains under scrutiny across multiple judicial forums. With the Supreme Court now set to examine Mahanta’s plea, attention has shifted to the upcoming hearing, which could influence the course of the ongoing legal proceedings.
