Marking International Yoga Day 2026, the Prime Minister said yoga promotes balanced living, strengthens physical and mental well-being, and serves as a unifying force across cultures and generations

Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, June 21, led the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations from Kolkata, describing yoga as a timeless practice that promotes harmony, well-being and human connection across the world.
Addressing thousands of participants at the city’s iconic Maidan, Modi said yoga has evolved into a global movement that transcends geographical, cultural and generational boundaries. “In this century, we realise that yoga has united the world,” he said.
The 2026 edition was observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focusing on the role of yoga in supporting physical fitness, mental wellness and emotional resilience throughout life.

Participating in the Common Yoga Protocol session, the Prime Minister urged people to make yoga a part of their daily routine rather than limiting it to special occasions. “Yoga helps us live a balanced life. It guides us on what to embrace and what to avoid,” he said.
Highlighting India’s contribution to the global wellness movement, Modi noted that the United Nations had recognised June 21 as International Yoga Day following India’s proposal. He described yoga as one of India’s most valuable gifts to humanity.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also acknowledged yoga’s universal appeal, stating that the ancient Indian practice continues to help millions worldwide find strength, peace and purpose.
The event witnessed participation from people of all ages, reinforcing yoga’s growing relevance in contemporary life.
