Seven people were killed and 11 injured after a private bus plunged onto a road below in Chamba’s treacherous Churah Valley in Himachal Pradesh
Chamba: At least seven people were killed and 11 others injured after a private bus skidded off a mountain road and plunged onto a road below in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district.
The accident occurred near Chalunj Mor on the Bairagarh-Tissa road in the remote Churah Valley. The 27-km route, which connects the area to the high-altitude Sach Pass, is known for its narrow stretches and steep drops.
The bus was travelling from Bairagarh to Chamba when the driver reportedly lost control while negotiating a turn. The vehicle skidded off the road, overturned and fell onto the road below at Chalunj.
Preliminary information suggested that around 20 to 25 passengers were travelling on the bus. Several people were trapped beneath the overturned vehicle, prompting local residents to begin rescue efforts before police and district authorities reached the site.
Backhoe loaders were deployed to lift the bus and assist in extricating those trapped underneath. The injured were shifted to nearby health facilities for treatment. Most of the passengers were reportedly locals travelling towards Chamba town. The deceased included the driver and conductor.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Saklani said the exact number of passengers on board was yet to be confirmed and that the cause of the accident remained under investigation.
Churah MLA Hans Raj expressed grief over the incident, calling the accident “extremely painful” and extending condolences to the victims’ families while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
