Terminal 2’s blend of Assamese heritage, bamboo architecture and nature-inspired design earns global recognition as four traditional crafts secure GI tags

Guwahati: Assam’s architectural and cultural heritage has received global acclaim, with the new Terminal 2 of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) being named among the Prix Versailles World’s Most Beautiful Airports of 2026.
The prestigious recognition celebrates the terminal’s unique design, which incorporates bamboo-inspired structures, indigenous motifs and an indoor “Sky Forest”, creating a space that reflects the spirit and traditions of Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the achievement as a proud moment for the state. “The world is taking note of Assam’s architectural identity. The new terminal of Guwahati Airport has earned global recognition for a design that seamlessly blends indigenous art, local craftsmanship and nature-inspired narratives,” he said.
The Chief Minister further added that the honour places Assam’s gateway to the Northeast among an exclusive group of globally celebrated airports. Managed by Adani Airport Holdings, the Guwahati terminal joins internationally acclaimed airports, including Singapore’s Changi, on the Prix Versailles list.
The recognition comes alongside another milestone for the state. Four traditional Assamese crafts, the Bihu Pepa instrument, Bah Silpa bamboo products, Karbi Anglong handlooms and Deori textiles have recently been granted Geographical Indication (GI) tags, strengthening efforts to preserve their authenticity and support local artisans.
Together, the achievements underscore Assam’s growing prominence on the global stage, not only as a destination of natural beauty but also as a custodian of rich cultural and architectural traditions.
