Advocate Gaurab Chakraborty to represent the accused as court proceedings continue; Fast Track Court reserves order on four other bail pleas
Guwahati: A fresh legal development has emerged in the case related to the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, with accused Shyamkanu Mahanta appointing a new advocate to represent him in the ongoing proceedings.
Sources said advocate Gaurab Chakraborty has been engaged as Mahanta’s legal counsel and is expected to appear on his behalf in upcoming hearings as the case moves forward.
The move comes less than two weeks after the Gauhati High Court rejected Mahanta’s bail application on May 29. Mahanta is among the accused in the case linked to Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025.
Meanwhile, proceedings have also advanced before the Special Fast Track Court, where arguments on the bail petitions of four other accused have concluded. After hearing submissions from both the prosecution and defence, the court reserved its verdict on the applications.
With a new legal team now in place, Mahanta is expected to continue pursuing available legal remedies while the investigation and trial process progress.
The case has remained under intense public scrutiny since the death of the celebrated singer, with several developments unfolding across multiple courts. Attention will now shift to the Fast Track Court’s pending order on the bail pleas and any future legal steps taken by the accused.
