Assam to Begin First Phase of Digital Census from August 2026

Over 83,000 enumerators to be deployed as officials review preparations for India’s first fully digital Census exercise

Guwahati: As Assam gears up for Census 2027, the state government held a high-level review meeting in Guwahati to assess preparations for what will be India’s first fully digital census exercise. The state government confirmed that the first phase of the exercise will begin from August 17 and continue till September 15, 2026.

The review meeting, held at the Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati, brought together senior officials from the state government and the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. Chief Secretary Ravi Kota chaired the conference and stressed the need for “strong coordination, timely preparation and public participation” to ensure smooth implementation across the state.

Officials said Census 2027 will be India’s first fully digital census and will be conducted in two stages, House listing and Housing Census (HLO), followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027. The reference date for the exercise has been fixed as March 1, 2027.

Residents will also be able to complete self-enumeration online through the official portal between August 2 and August 16, before field verification begins.

Authorities informed that nearly 83,535 enumerators and supervisors, including reserve personnel, will be engaged during the first phase in Assam. To support the operation, the state has appointed 59 master trainers and over 1,100 field trainers for district-level capacity building programmes beginning next month.

Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Mritunjay Kumar Narayan highlighted the role of technology-driven monitoring systems and digital tools in improving transparency and accuracy during data collection.

Officials added that the census data would support future planning related to housing, infrastructure and public services across Assam.
