Court to pronounce decision on May 29 after hearing arguments from both defence and state in the Zubeen Garg death case

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on May 25 reserved its order on the bail plea filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta in connection with the widely discussed Zubeen Garg death case, with the verdict scheduled to be delivered on May 29.
The matter came up before the bench of Justice Mitali Thakuria and marked the third hearing in the case, which has drawn significant public attention across Assam.
During the proceedings, senior advocate Pran Bora, appearing for Mahanta, argued that the incident was “an accident and not an intentional act.” The defence maintained that Mahanta could not be held criminally responsible and cited statements recorded before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to support the claim.
The legal team also referred to judicial precedents from similar cases while seeking bail for the accused.
On the other hand, the state opposed the plea and urged the court to reject it. Senior advocate Devajit Lon Saikia appeared on behalf of the government during the hearing. After hearing submissions from both sides, the court reserved its decision on the bail application till May 29.
