Bhutan PM Tobgay in Assam for Key Talks on Connectivity, Trade and Border Infrastructure

Discussions during the visit are expected to focus on cross-border rail connectivity, trade, tourism and regional infrastructure projects between Bhutan and Northeast India

Guwahati: Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay arrived in Assam, for a two-day visit that is expected to strengthen India-Bhutan cooperation in connectivity, infrastructure and regional development.

During his stay, Tobgay is scheduled to meet Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan. Officials said the visit comes at a crucial time as both sides look to accelerate key bilateral initiatives following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bhutan visit last year.

A major focus of the discussions is likely to be the proposed Gelephu-Kokrajhar rail link, which is being viewed as a strategic project to improve cross-border trade, tourism and economic integration between Bhutan and Northeast India.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the Bhutanese Prime Minister in Guwahati and highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two countries. “Bharat and Bhutan share a very special civilisational relationship and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam is playing a pivotal role in strengthening this relationship,” the CM said in a post on X.

“The Gelephu-Kokrajhar project has the potential to transform regional connectivity and strengthen economic ties between the two countries,” officials associated with the discussions said.

The Bhutanese Prime Minister was received by Assam minister Atul Bora and senior government officials upon his arrival. He was also welcomed by Nalbari district officials earlier during the visit.
