Assam LoP dismisses reports of joining BJP or contesting from Nagaon, says he will continue raising public issues and fighting for Congress in the state

Guwahati: Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on Monday firmly denied speculation about joining the Bharatiya Janata Party or contesting from the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, describing the claims as “baseless” and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on May 18, Saikia clarified that he remains committed to the Indian National Congress and has no plans to switch parties or enter any by-election contest.
“There is no question of leaving Congress,” he asserted, while alleging that certain groups were trying to push him out of Assam’s political landscape through misinformation campaigns.
Saikia said he would continue to serve as a strong opposition voice in the Assam Assembly and raise issues affecting the people of the state. He also expressed concern over what he called growing threats to democratic institutions and criticised the functioning of the Election Commission.
Targeting the BJP-led state government, the Congress leader alleged that prices of essential commodities had increased significantly after the elections, placing additional pressure on ordinary citizens.
The Congress leader further accused the government of misusing public resources and favouring corporate interests over public welfare. Despite the speculation surrounding his political future, Saikia maintained that both he and the Congress party would continue their “fight for the people of Assam.”
