Portfolio allocation follows NDA’s 102-seat victory in the 2026 Assembly polls, with the government also announcing a UCC bill, austerity measures and a major employment push

Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, on May 14, approved the allocation of departments for four newly inducted ministers in the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led NDA government after the alliance’s sweeping victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
According to the official notification issued from Raj Bhavan, the NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, including 82 won by the BJP alone.
Under the new portfolio distribution, Rameswar Teli was assigned the Transformation and Development, Labour Welfare, and Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare departments. Atul Bora received Panchayat and Rural Development, Implementation of Assam Accord, Border Protection and Development, along with Excise.

Meanwhile, Charan Boro will oversee Transport and Welfare of Bodoland, while Ajanta Neog was given Women and Child Development and Tourism.
The cabinet also cleared several major proposals during its first meeting. These included plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill on May 26, implement austerity measures such as reducing official convoys and fuel consumption, and create a task force aimed at generating 2 lakh jobs.
Additionally, the government approved the establishment of a museum dedicated to legendary musician Bhupen Hazarika.
