The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government said the UCC Bill will be introduced on May 26, while also unveiling plans to honour Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy with a Rs 32-crore museum

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government on Wednesday approved the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with the Bill set to be introduced in the Assembly on May 26 during the concluding day of the upcoming session.
Addressing the media after the first cabinet meeting of the new NDA government, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the proposed legislation would cover compulsory marriage registration, divorce, live-in relationships, minimum marriage age, property rights for women and restrictions on polygamy.
“The UCC will be almost in sync with Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Goa. However, Assam’s tribal communities, customs and traditions will remain completely exempt,” the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the legislation forms part of the BJP-led government’s manifesto commitments and added that the proposed law has been designed keeping Assam’s diverse social structure in mind.
Alongside the UCC decision, the cabinet also announced that the concluding ceremony of Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations will be held at Bharat Mandapam on September 8.
In another key cultural initiative, the state government approved plans to construct a dedicated museum in memory of Bhupen Hazarika at an estimated cost of Rs 32 crore. The museum will showcase the life, music, literary works and cultural contributions of the legendary artist, popularly known as Sudhakantha.
The decisions marked the first major policy announcements of the NDA government’s new term, blending legislative reform with a renewed emphasis on preserving Assam’s cultural identity and legacy.
