Four Arrested as Assam Police Bust Organ Trafficking Racket in Margherita

Joint operation by Dibrugarh and Tinsukia police rescues Margherita man allegedly lured with money and job promises to sell kidney

Dibrugarh: A joint operation by police in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district has uncovered a suspected human organ trafficking network, leading to the arrest of four alleged brokers linked to an illegal kidney trade racket.

The accused have been identified as Zakir Hussain, Shankar Chentanu, Samir Pal, and Gopal Roy. According to investigators, the group allegedly attempted to transport a 35-year-old man from Margherita to facilitate the sale of his kidney after reportedly enticing him with promises of employment and financial support. Police said two of the accused are from Dibrugarh, while the others belong to the Veneer Mill area of Margherita.

The operation was launched after the victim’s family approached the police with a complaint. Acting on the information, a coordinated raid led by Tinsukia DSP (Crime) Faiz Ahmed resulted in the arrest of all four suspects from different locations across Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.

Investigators now suspect the existence of a wider organ trafficking network operating in parts of Assam, particularly targeting financially vulnerable individuals in tea garden regions through false promises and inducements.

Police have registered a case at Margherita Police Station and are also examining whether any hospitals, doctors, or medical staff may have had links to the alleged racket.
