Himanta Biswa Sarma Resigns as Assam CM: Sets Stage for NDA Government Formation

Resignation submitted to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya following formal notification of results as NDA prepares to form the next government

Guwahati: Following the NDA’s clear mandate in the Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on April 6, stepped down from his post, formally submitting his resignation along with the Council of Ministers to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhawan.

The move comes soon after the Chief Electoral Officer officially communicated the election results to the Governor, thereby triggering the constitutional process for government formation. By tendering his resignation, Sarma has cleared the way for the next administration to be constituted under the newly elected Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to convene a meeting of its newly elected MLAs in the coming days. The exercise will be conducted in the presence of central observers, including J. P. Nadda and Baijayant Panda, to formally elect the leader of the legislative party.

Subsequently, the Governor is likely to invite the NDA to stake a claim and form the government. On the Opposition’s position, Sarma pointed out that the Indian National Congress, with 19 MLAs, may fall short of the required strength to claim the Leader of the Opposition post, as the threshold stands at 22 members under existing rules
