Assam Awaits Verdict as Vote Counting Nears: NDA Targets 100 Seats, Opposition Signals Confidence

Tight security, strong turnout, and high-stakes contests across key constituencies set the stage for May 4 results.

Guwahati: Assam has entered the decisive phase of the 2026 Assembly elections, with vote counting scheduled for May 4 amid intense political anticipation and extensive security arrangements.

A total of 40 counting centres have been set up across 35 districts, where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) carrying the mandate of voters will be opened under strict supervision. As part of security measures, 25 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces, along with state police, have been deployed. Counting of postal ballots will begin at 8 am, followed by EVM counting from 8:30 am.

At the district level, preparations have been strengthened further. Lakhimpur has implemented a three-tier security system, while Sivasagar has deployed nearly 400 personnel to oversee counting operations. Officials reiterated that “all arrangements are in place” to ensure transparency and smooth conduct.

Several high-profile constituencies are under close watch, including Jalukbari, where Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting, Nazira which is represented by Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, and Jorhat where Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi is a key contender. Dhubri also remains significant with AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal in the fray, while Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi is contesting from Sivasagar.

Meanwhile, political camps have intensified their claims. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia said the NDA is “on course to cross 100 seats,” citing strong voter backing. Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed similar confidence, stating, “I expect the BJP to perform even better than before. Out of 126 seats, we may secure around 90 to 100 seats.”

On the other hand, Congress leaders projected a contrasting narrative. Gaurav Gogoi dismissed exit polls as “narrative-building exercises” and asserted that “people have voted for change.” Congress MP Rakibul Hussain said the alliance is united and “ready to act when required.”

With a voter turnout of 85.96 percent recorded on April 9, the results are expected to shape Assam’s political trajectory for the next five years.
