Guwahati Flood Crisis Turns Fatal: Woman Dies, Schools Closed Across City

After heavy April 19 rainfall paralyses the city, authorities shut institutions and issued a safety advisory amid widespread waterlogging

Guwahati: A spell of heavy rainfall on April 19 pushed Guwahati into crisis, turning fatal after a woman lost her life and forcing authorities to shut all educational institutions across the city on April 20.

The deceased, identified as Payel Nath from Dharapur, was swept into a fast-moving drain in Maligaon after reportedly falling into an open manhole. Despite a prolonged search operation, her body was recovered nearly 400 metres away. She was rushed to a nearby facility, where doctors declared her dead.

In response, the Government of Assam ordered the closure of all schools and colleges within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation limits. Officials said the step was taken “in the greater public interest” to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff. The directive has been issued under provisions of the Disaster Management Act.

Meanwhile, relentless rain left several areas, including Hatigaon, Six Mile, Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Hengrabari–Ganeshguri, and Beltola, severely waterlogged. Roads remained submerged, vehicles stalled for hours, and floodwaters entered homes, disrupting daily life. In Hatigaon, water levels rose up to knee height, worsening traffic congestion.

As the situation unfolded, authorities urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary movement. Emergency teams continue to monitor conditions, even as renewed concerns surface over the city’s drainage infrastructure.
