Runikhata Violence: BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary Seeks Forest Report, Announces Visit

Council to review eviction drive as arrests rise; internet suspension continues in Chirang, Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: Amid tension following the Runikhata violence, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohoilary states that the BTC will seek a detailed report from the Forest Department to understand the sequence of events that led to the unrest.

Speaking to the media in Dhaligaon, Mohilary clarified that law and order remain under the jurisdiction of the Assam government. However, he added that the council would still examine whether any lapse in the eviction drive may have contributed to the situation. “We will request a full report on Monday and expect a proper inquiry,” he said.

The BTC Chief further noted that allegations of political involvement cannot be entirely ruled out, yet cautioned against blaming entire communities for the actions of a few. “Those responsible will face legal consequences,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Mohilary said clarity on claims of attacks on police personnel and damage to a journalist’s vehicle would emerge only after the departmental findings are reviewed. He emphasised that the Forest Department’s mandate is to protect forest land and must be assessed on whether procedures were followed.

In addition, Mohilary announced that he, along with BTC executive members, would visit Runikhata to assess ground realities.

Security remains tight in Chirang district and adjoining Kokrajhar district, where mobile internet services have been suspended as a precaution. Officials confirmed that 19 people have been detained so far, with further action likely as investigations continue. Authorities said the situation is currently stable, though forces remain deployed to prevent fresh incidents.
