3 Missing, 18 Homes Damaged as Flash Floods Hit Arunachal’s Keyi Panyor District

Flash floods triggered by incessant rain damaged 18 houses in Keyi Panyor district, while landslides blocked key road links and disrupted vehicular movement.

Itanagar: At least three people were reported missing and 18 residential units were damaged after incessant rainfall triggered flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district, officials said.

According to state Disaster Management Secretary Dani Sulu, the incident occurred near the NEEPCO project colony at Poosa under the Yazali circle, where an under-construction retaining wall collapsed following heavy rainfall. The collapse led to a sudden influx of water into nearby low-lying residential areas. “At least 18 residential units got damaged, and three persons were reportedly missing,” Sulu said.

The district administration has directed senior officials, including the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Circle Officer, to assess the situation and coordinate rescue operations.

A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been alerted and is moving to the affected area. Reserve personnel, vehicles and ex-servicemen have also been mobilised to support rescue efforts.

The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has begun releasing water from the Ranganadi dam as a precautionary measure, and power generation at the project has been temporarily suspended.

Heavy rainfall also triggered landslides at three locations along the highway near Potin and Hoj, disrupting vehicular movement and leaving several travellers stranded. Authorities have deployed machinery and directed contractors to clear debris and restore connectivity.

Search, rescue and damage assessment operations are ongoing. Officials said the full extent of losses is yet to be determined as heavy rain continues to affect several parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
