Continuous rainfall in Dima Hasao and Meghalaya has pushed reservoir levels higher, prompting a controlled water release and precautionary warnings for downstream areas

Guwahati: The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has initiated a controlled release of water from the Khandong Hydroelectric Project reservoir in Assam’s Dima Hasao district after persistent rainfall caused a significant rise in water levels.
In a special advisory, the corporation said continuous rain across Dima Hasao and adjoining parts of Meghalaya had increased inflows into the reservoir, necessitating the opening of the dam gates as a safety measure.
Consequently, NEEPCO has alerted district administrations, disaster management authorities and emergency response agencies across the Kapili River basin to prepare for a possible increase in downstream river levels.
The corporation urged officials to take precautionary steps and ensure that communities residing in low-lying areas and along the river remain informed and vigilant. Authorities also advised residents to avoid entering the river or venturing close to its banks until the situation stabilises.
“Necessary precautionary measures may be taken in downstream areas,” the advisory stated, warning that the water release could impact river conditions along the Kapili’s course.
Meanwhile, local administrations have been asked to closely monitor developments and issue area-specific warnings whenever required. The advisory comes as several parts of Assam and Meghalaya continue to receive heavy rainfall, keeping flood management agencies on alert.
