Singer’s sister questions alleged VIP treatment during accused’s jail stay as controversy grows over her release on bail

Guwahati: Amritprabha Mahanta, one of the seven accused in the death case of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, appeared before a special fast-track court on Wednesday, October 14, a day after being released on bail. Her lawyer, Anand Kumar Bhuyan, also faced allegations of misbehaviour towards journalists at the court entrance.
According to reports, Bhuyan was seen confronting journalists as Mahanta arrived at the court premises. The allegations against the lawyer have not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, Garg’s sister, Dr Palmee Borthakur, questioned whether Mahanta had received special privileges during her nearly year-long custody. In a social media post, she raised concerns over the quantity of belongings reportedly loaded into a vehicle during Mahanta’s release from Haflong sub-jail and questioned whether the accused were being treated like ordinary prisoners.
Borthakur also alleged that the vehicle’s driver appeared to warn people gathered nearby to keep their distance. Her claims about the circumstances of the release have not been independently verified.
The Gauhati High Court granted Mahanta bail on October 9 against a bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. She was released on October 13.
Mahanta’s release is the first reported instance of an accused securing bail in the main case. The proceedings into Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025, remain ongoing.
