SP chief questions why he was denied a chance to speak as Opposition presses for discussion on police action and examination irregularities
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday questioned Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging he was denied an opportunity to speak during a discussion on the NEET controversy and the police action against student protesters.
Raising the issue in the House, Yadav said the matter concerned the country’s students and youth rather than any political party. “This issue does not belong to any one political party. It is about the students and youth of the country,” he said.
Claiming Congress and BJP members were allowed to speak, Yadav asked the Speaker, “You allowed them to speak… Have you reached some kind of understanding?”
He also renewed the Opposition’s demand for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation and criticised the police response to recent student protests. Referring to Tuesday’s Congress demonstration, Yadav said, “Rahul Gandhi and I went to the Prime Minister’s residence because we had no other option.”
Responding to the Opposition, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was ready for a discussion on the NEET and paper leak issue. Speaker Om Birla later urged both sides to agree on a suitable time and duration for the debate.
