US–Iran Talks Begin in Islamabad Amid Fragile Ceasefire and Rising West Asia Stakes

Three-way dialogue with Pakistan focuses on Lebanon ceasefire, sanctions-linked assets, and Strait of Hormuz security

Islamabad: Fresh diplomatic momentum is building as the United States and Iran have opened high-level talks in Islamabad, in what is being seen as one of their most significant engagements in recent decades. The dialogue, facilitated by Pakistan, aims to ease escalating tensions across West Asia following weeks of conflict.

The negotiations come after a brief pause in hostilities, including reduced Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon, creating space for diplomatic outreach. However, the situation remains volatile, with intermittent strikes raising concerns over the durability of the fragile ceasefire.

Key issues on the table include efforts to formalise a ceasefire in Lebanon, the release of Iranian financial assets held abroad, and discussions around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial artery for global oil supply.

The talks also highlight deep divisions. Iran has emphasised the need for sanctions relief and broader regional guarantees, while the United States continues to prioritise maritime security and long-term stability in the region. Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref has cautioned that any agreement must remain balanced and not tilt towards Israel.

Senior leadership from both sides is directly involved, with Iran’s delegation led by Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and the US represented by Vice President J D Vance.

While expectations of a quick breakthrough remain limited, both sides have signalled willingness to continue engagement. The outcome of these talks could prove pivotal in shaping the region’s security landscape in the coming months.
