Two Youths Killed in Kakopathar Crash: NH-15 Blocked Amid Protests

Speeding Bolero hits a stationary motorcycle during Bihu; driver detained, thousands stranded as locals demand justice

Kakopathar: Two young men lost their lives in a late-night road accident at Lajum village in Kakopathar on April 17, triggering widespread protests and a major highway blockade in Upper Assam.

The victims have been identified as Pranajit Das, a goalkeeper with the Kakopathar Football Coaching Centre, and Shashank Moran. According to eyewitnesses, the duo were seated on a motorcycle parked by the roadside when a speeding Bolero (AS-01 V 0399) rammed into them. The vehicle was reportedly approaching from the Kakopathar side.

Both sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Although locals rushed them to a nearby hospital, doctors declared them dead. Police later detained the driver, who is suspected of having been under the influence of alcohol, and seized the vehicle.

Meanwhile, anger over the incident spilled onto the streets. From early April 18, residents blocked National Highway 15 near Kakopathar Police Station, burning tyres and demanding “immediate justice” along with compensation and rehabilitation for the bereaved families.

As a result, thousands of vehicles remain stranded on both sides of the highway, severely disrupting movement in the region. Authorities have been urged to step in swiftly to defuse tensions and restore normalcy.

The situation remains tense, with police monitoring the area closely and further updates awaited.
