AJYCP stages a Guwahati protest demanding national recognition of Assam’s flood-erosion crisis and Rs 10,000 crore special assistance
Guwahati: The Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a three-hour sit-in protest in Guwahati, demanding a permanent solution to Assam’s recurring flood and river erosion crisis and its recognition as a national problem.
Protesters urged the Centre to provide immediate financial assistance and implement long-term measures to address the repeated destruction caused by floods and erosion.
The organisation demanded that the Centre formally recognise Assam’s flood and erosion crisis as a national problem and release Rs 10,000 crore in special assistance for the economic revival of flood-hit Upper Assam.
AJYCP leader Bijan Bayan also called for the Centre to allocate Rs 10,000 crore annually through the Union Budget to rebuild Assam’s economy, which suffers recurring losses due to floods and erosion.
“Assam’s flood and erosion problems need a permanent solution. The Centre must stop treating Assam as a stepchild. If Assam’s resources are considered national resources, then Assam’s problems must also be treated as national problems,” Bayan said.
The AJYCP warned that if annual central assistance was not provided, the Centre should stop collecting royalties from Assam through public sector undertakings including Oil India, ONGC and Coal India.
The organisation also demanded greater rights for Assam over its mineral and natural resources, stressing that sustained central investment and a comprehensive strategy were needed to break the cycle of recurring flood-related economic losses.
