The apex court has asked the Assam government to file its response within three weeks in the Zubeen Garg death case before the matter is heard again in July

Guwahati: The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Assam government on a bail plea filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta, the event manager and chief organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, in connection with the case relating to the death of Assam’s music icon Zubeen Garg.
A Bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Joymalya Bagchi directed the State government to file its response within three weeks. The matter has been listed for further hearing at the end of July.
Mahanta approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail petition on May 29. The Supreme Court’s notice marks the next stage of legal proceedings in the case.
According to the court order, the Assam government has been granted three weeks to place its response on record before the matter is taken up for detailed consideration. The court did not pass any interim relief during the hearing.
Mahanta is one of the accused in the case linked to the death of Zubeen Garg. Through his petition, he has challenged the Gauhati High Court’s decision denying him bail and sought relief from the Supreme Court.
The Bench is expected to examine submissions from both the petitioner and the State government during the next hearing scheduled for the end of July. The outcome of the proceedings could determine whether Mahanta is granted bail while the investigation and trial process continue.
