The 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project said advance warning systems alerted authorities six hours before the river discharge surged to nearly 13,000 cumecs

Itanagar: Water discharge in the Subansiri River rose sharply after midnight on July 13 following heavy inflows from upstream areas, with the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) stating that its advance flood warning system helped reduce the downstream impact.
According to the project authorities, flood early warning systems installed at Daporijo on the Subansiri River and Tamen on the Kamala River detected rapidly rising water levels and issued alerts nearly six hours in advance. Following the warnings, district administrations were informed and sirens were sounded around midnight to alert people living along downstream riverbanks.
SLHEP said river discharge increased from around 7,000 cumecs shortly after midnight to a peak inflow of nearly 13,000 cumecs at 10:45 am.
The project noted that the Subansiri River has a safe carrying capacity of approximately 7,000 cumecs. It said the reservoir of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project moderated the flood by reducing the peak inflow of around 13,000 cumecs to an outflow of about 12,000 cumecs at around 11 am, helping delay and lessen the downstream flood peak. Water discharge later declined steadily, falling to around 7,500 cumecs by the evening.
According to the project, local television reports indicated that the advance warnings and flood moderation measures enabled downstream communities to prepare in time and helped minimise the impact of the high river flow.
