Assam and Meghalaya CMs Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad Sangma agree to ease tensions after violence during a KSU rally in Shillong
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma have agreed to work together to restore peace following violence during a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) rally in Shillong on August 19.
Sangma said the two leaders discussed the violence and its aftermath, which affected people and commuters from both states. Designated cabinet ministers from Assam and Meghalaya will now take the discussions forward and explore measures to restore “peace, trust and normalcy”.
Sangma appealed to citizens of both states to maintain restraint, stressing their deep historical and people-to-people ties.
The Assam CM, meanwhile, said he had conveyed Assam’s concerns over the incidents, particularly those involving Assam-registered vehicles. He described Assam and Meghalaya as “sister states” and said Border Protection Minister Atul Bora would coordinate with Meghalaya authorities.
The Shillong violence reportedly left several people injured and damaged at least 31 vehicles, while two government vehicles were set ablaze, according to East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem.
The unrest later spilled into Assam, with disruptions reported at Jorabat and a blockade of Meghalaya-bound vehicles on NH-27 by Guwahati-based cab operators.
