Over 2,680 Suspected Bangladeshis Identified: Deportation Awaits Verification

Nationality confirmation from Bangladesh remains the final step as the Centre pushes for faster processing of long-pending cases amid renewed focus on illegal migration and demographic concerns in the Northeast

New Delhi: The Centre on Friday said it is prepared to deport more than 2,680 individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals once their citizenship is formally verified by authorities in Bangladesh, a development likely to draw significant attention in Assam and other northeastern states.

Addressing a media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has already shared details of over 2,680 suspected cases with Bangladesh for nationality verification.

“Individuals found to be residing illegally in India will be dealt with as per the law,” Jaiswal said, adding that deportation procedures can begin only after Bangladesh confirms their citizenship status.

He noted that responses in several cases have remained pending for more than five years and expressed hope that the verification process would be expedited under existing bilateral mechanisms.

The announcement comes as concerns over illegal migration continue to influence political and policy discussions across the Northeast, particularly in Assam. Issues related to demographic change, pressure on land and resources, and protection of indigenous communities have remained central to public discourse for decades.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has constituted a High-Level Committee to examine demographic changes across the country. The panel will study trends linked to illegal immigration, cross-border movement, and unusual settlement patterns.

The move has generated interest in states such as Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, where governments and civil society groups have repeatedly sought stronger border management and more effective mechanisms to identify illegal migrants.
