From a deadly attack in Nalbari to a police encounter and a village’s refusal to allow burial, the case has sparked intense debate over crime, communal tensions and public sentiment in Assam
Guwahati: What began as a violent attack on two young people in Assam’s Nalbari district has rapidly transformed into one of the state’s most discussed and emotionally charged cases in recent years.
The Gangapur incident, which claimed the life of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman and left 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka critically injured, has triggered widespread outrage, political reactions and heated public debate. The victims were allegedly attacked while travelling on a scooter near Gangapur under the Mukalmua area on the night of May 31.
As police investigations progressed, Roz Ali emerged as the prime accused. Authorities subsequently launched a manhunt, culminating in a police encounter in Mukalmua during which Ali was killed. Another accused, Ashik Ali, remains under investigation.
However, the story did not end with the encounter.
In an unprecedented move, residents of Deharkalakuchi, Roz Ali’s native village, along with people from five neighbouring villages, reportedly decided not to allow his burial in the community graveyard. Villagers also chose to distance themselves from the funeral proceedings, reflecting the depth of public anger surrounding the case.
The incident has also fuelled a larger conversation after several organisations described it as a “love jihad” case, alleging that the attack was linked to the rejection of a proposal by the accused. Police, however, have not officially confirmed any such motive and continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the crime.
The case drew political attention as well. Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah termed “love jihad” a growing social concern and called for stringent action against those involved in such crimes.
Meanwhile, Madhurjya Barman’s death has resonated deeply across Assam. A student leader and Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students’ Union, Barman has become a symbol of the tragedy that unfolded that night. Mridumudra Deka continues to battle for recovery at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
As investigators work to establish the complete sequence of events, the Gangapur case remains far more than a criminal investigation. It has evolved into a flashpoint touching on public safety, social trust, community relations and the growing demand for justice from across Assam.
