Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma mourned former Chief Secretary Rebecca Suchiang, remembering her leadership, public service and contribution to the state

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed deep grief over the death of former Chief Secretary Rebecca V. Suchiang, remembering her as a respected civil servant whose leadership and dedication left a lasting mark on the state’s administration.
In his condolence message, Sangma described Suchiang as the first indigenous woman Chief Secretary of Meghalaya and praised her ability to take bold decisions during difficult circumstances.
“As the first indigenous woman Chief Secretary, Kong Rebecca made bold decisions at tough times and was respected for her leadership among her peers, her guidance to her juniors and her inspiring work ethics,” the Chief Minister said. Sangma also recalled Suchiang’s determination while battling prolonged illness, saying she fought bravely and continued to serve despite her health challenges.
Suchiang, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, took oath as Meghalaya Chief Secretary on September 30, 2021, succeeding M S Rao. She was the first Khasi woman to hold the state’s top bureaucratic post. She passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment for cancer, after battling the disease for more than two years.
Sangma said her service and dedication to Meghalaya would be remembered and extended his condolences to her family and loved ones.
