CFJM flags missing FIR, demands accountability after April 7 violence

Imphal: Citizens for Justice, Manipur (CFJM) has called on the state government to order a judicial inquiry into the deaths of three civilians allegedly killed in firing by CRPF personnel on April 7, hours after a bomb attack claimed the lives of two children in Bishnupur district.
Addressing the media, CFJM chairman and former Manipur State Human Rights Commission head Khaidem Mani stressed the need for transparency. He urged authorities to make public the status of the First Information Report (FIR), stating that it remains unclear whether a case has been registered in connection with the firing.
According to available reports, the deceased have been identified as Huidrom Michael (40), Laishram Jiten (41), and Wahengbam Boby (29), who later succumbed to injuries at RIMS. The incident occurred when protesters reportedly stormed a CRPF camp in Gelmol, expressing outrage over the earlier blast that killed five-year-old Oinam Tomthin and his five-month-old sister.
While an FIR has been lodged at Moirang police station regarding the children’s deaths, CFJM pointed out that no such action appears to have been taken in the case of the three protesters. More than 30 civilians were also injured during the firing, raising serious concerns about the use of force.
Calling for decisive action, Mani urged the government to address the broader security situation. He warned that prolonged unrest could deepen public dissatisfaction and revive debates around historical issues, including the Manipur Merger Agreement of 1949.
