A 36-year-old electric lineman was killed while carrying out maintenance work, while 24 houses were allegedly set ablaze in a separate incident
Imphal: Fresh incidents of violence were reported in Manipur’s hill districts on September 23, with an electric lineman allegedly shot dead in Tamenglong district and at least 24 houses set ablaze in Kangpokpi district.
The 36-year-old lineman, identified as Paojangam Chongloi, was allegedly shot around 4 am while carrying out maintenance work on a 33 KV power line at Lasan village under Tamei police station.
Police said the site was around 29 km from the police station and that difficult terrain delayed the response. Kangpokpi District Police were subsequently sought for tactical assistance and investigation.
A local village authority sought registration of a Zero FIR and a detailed probe, alleging the involvement of NSCN-IM cadres and armed volunteers from Langka village. Police said the allegations had not been independently verified and that the identities of those responsible were still being investigated.
In a separate incident in Kangpokpi, at least 24 houses in two Naga villages were allegedly set ablaze by unidentified miscreants. Investigations into both incidents are underway.
