Organisation claims suspected NSCN-IM militants attacked and torched Leikot Kuki Village in Manipur’s Noney district, urging authorities to conduct an impartial investigation
Imphal: Kuki Inpi Jiribam, Tamenglong and Noney (JTN) has strongly condemned an alleged attack on Leikot Kuki Village in Manipur’s Noney district, claiming that suspected NSCN-IM militants targeted the village early on Thursday.
In a statement issued on July 2, the apex body of the Kuki tribes alleged that the attack occurred at around 5:00 am when armed militants launched an assault on the village. According to the organisation, local village volunteers attempted to defend the settlement using licensed single-barrel firearms but were outgunned by attackers allegedly armed with automatic weapons and mortar shells.
The organisation claimed that the volunteers were eventually forced to retreat, after which Leikot Kuki Village was allegedly set ablaze, causing extensive damage to houses and property. These claims have not been independently verified, and there has been no official confirmation or response from security agencies.
Describing the incident as a serious threat to peace and civilian safety, Kuki Inpi termed the alleged attack an act of aggression against civilians and questioned the adequacy of security arrangements in vulnerable areas of Noney district.
The organisation appealed to the Central Government, the Manipur Government and security agencies to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation, identify those responsible and bring them to justice. It also urged authorities to strengthen security in vulnerable villages to prevent similar incidents and warned that failure to address the concerns of affected residents could further aggravate tensions.
