Manipur HC Seeks Action Report on Missing Naga Men as Protest Intensifies

Court directs state government to submit status report by June 8; ANSAM launches march demanding urgent progress in search for six men missing since May 13

Imphal: The disappearance of six Naga civilians in Manipur has drawn fresh judicial and public attention, with the High Court directing the state government to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) on the ongoing investigation by June 8.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Naga Lawyers’ Association, Manipur, the court sought details of efforts undertaken to trace the six men, who reportedly went missing from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13. The petition urged authorities to intensify search operations and ensure coordinated action among security agencies.

During the proceedings, the state government informed the court that the matter had been referred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). However, the Deputy Solicitor General of India reportedly stated that the agency had not yet received formal communication regarding the transfer.

Meanwhile, public pressure over the case continues to mount. The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) on Wednesday launched a protest march from Ukhrul to Makhan village, seeking faster action and greater transparency in the investigation.

The student body said the demonstration was aimed at expressing solidarity with the affected families and highlighting the absence of concrete updates nearly three weeks after the incident. ANSAM also warned that additional protest programmes could follow if authorities fail to provide credible information on the missing men.

The case remains unresolved, with families and community organisations continuing to demand urgent intervention and accountability.
