Makum Erupts in Protest After Assault Victim Dies: NH37 Blocked

Thousands joined demonstrations demanding justice for Mukut Orang, while police detained the accused and sealed his restaurant amid rising tensions

Makum: A wave of protests swept through Assam’s Tinsukia district on Tuesday after Mukut Orang (45), who was allegedly assaulted earlier this month, died while undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.

The incident sparked outrage in Makum, where thousands of residents gathered at Gangabari and blocked National Highway 37, demanding justice for the deceased and stringent action against those responsible.

Orang, a resident of Gangabari Gate Line, had reportedly been assaulted on June 11. Police said the accused, Mohammed Imran Siddiqui, proprietor of the restaurant Urban Tasty and a resident of Purana Bazar in Borhapjan, has been arrested in connection with the case.

Protesters, led by the All Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) and backed by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and several other organisations, also sought compensation for Orang’s family and called for a comprehensive investigation.

Amid mounting public pressure, police sealed Siddiqui’s restaurant and registered Case No. 30/2026 under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 27 of the Arms Act. Officials also claimed to have recovered a pistol from the accused’s possession.

Heavy security was deployed across the area to prevent further escalation as demonstrations continued. Senior Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar Jha could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
