Residents blame poor drainage and alleged culvert blockages as five schools suspend classes amid widespread waterlogging
Nagaon: A severe artificial flooding situation in Juria in Assam’s Nagaon district has affected around 20 villages, with nearly 10,000 bighas of agricultural land submerged and normal life disrupted.
Water has entered the premises of several schools, forcing five schools to suspend classes, according to local residents. More than 20 areas, including Adhakunda village, have reported extensive waterlogging, affecting roads, agricultural fields and residential areas.
Residents have alleged that inadequate drainage facilities and the illegal blockage of culverts at several locations have prevented rainwater from flowing out naturally. The prolonged waterlogging has raised concerns over crop damage and loss of livelihood among farmers. Transportation has also been disrupted in several areas as roads remain inundated.
Residents have accused the administration of failing to take timely action to drain the accumulated water. They have particularly questioned the alleged inaction of the Rupahi Revenue Circle administration despite repeated complaints about blocked drainage channels and culverts.
Locals have demanded immediate measures to clear the blockages and drain the affected areas. They have also called for a permanent drainage system to prevent recurring artificial flooding in Juria, including Lalung Gaon.
