Imphal: The Taphou Kuki Village Authority has condemned the burning of a residential house belonging to a family from Taphou Kuki village in Manipur’s Senapati district in the early hours of Monday.
In a statement issued on August 24, the authority described the incident as “deplorable, inhuman and unacceptable”, saying the destruction caused property and livelihood losses while leaving the affected family in fear.
The authority urged the district administration and police to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and take legal action. It also appealed to communities to avoid violence, arson and retaliatory attacks.
The development comes amid reports of fresh tension in a sensitive boundary area after unidentified armed persons allegedly torched two houses belonging to Kuki and Paomai Naga residents near Laingmai Naga Taphou and Kuki Taphou.
No casualties were immediately reported, but stone-pelting and sporadic gunfire were reported following the incident. Security forces, including Assam Rifles and state commandos, were deployed to contain the situation.
The Taphou Kuki Village Authority has given those allegedly responsible 24 hours to come forward and resolve the matter under Kuki customary law, while warning of possible consequences if they fail to do so.
