The students’ body said it will monitor ONGC’s implementation of the commitments
Guwahati: The All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) on Sunday, August 23, suspended its proposed statewide shutdown of ONGC on August 25 following a four-hour meeting with the public sector oil and gas company in Sivasagar.
ATASU president Basanta Gogoi said several Assam-related demands were discussed during the meeting. According to the organisation, ONGC agreed to consider employment opportunities for local candidates and assured that it would not shift its offices out of Assam. The company also agreed to provide training and support to students from Assam preparing for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations.
On concerns over the relocation of some financial operations to Delhi, ONGC reportedly said the move was aimed at centralising financial processes and did not signify a shift of its operations from Assam.
ONGC also assured ATASU that the historic Pohu Garh site in Sivasagar would be developed, beautified and preserved. ATASU had announced the shutdown over employment concerns, administrative decisions and heritage conservation.
The ATASU President further asserted that the organisation would monitor the implementation of ONGC’s assurances and decide its next course of action based on developments.
