Delhi HC Stays JNU’s Dismissal of Congress MP Bimol Akoijam Amid Sexual Harassment Case

The Inner Manipur MP has also sought anticipatory bail, with his plea likely to be heard by a Delhi trial court on Tuesday

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) order terminating the services of Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is facing allegations of sexual harassment. The Congress MP from Inner Manipur has also approached a Delhi trial court seeking anticipatory bail, with the matter listed for hearing on Tuesday.

Justice Anup J Bhambhani issued notice to the university on Akoijam’s petition challenging his dismissal order dated October 9 and scheduled the next hearing for January. In his plea, Akoijam denied the allegations and described his termination as a “witch hunt”.

JNU had dismissed Akoijam, a professor at its School of Social Sciences, following an inquiry by the university’s Internal Committee, which recommended disciplinary action.

The Delhi Police registered an FIR on October 11 based on a complaint by JNU’s Chief Security Officer. The case includes charges of sexual harassment and acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty. The FIR refers to findings and material gathered during the university’s internal inquiry.

According to reports, at least 11 female students had submitted complaints in May, alleging inappropriate conduct and remarks by the professor. The allegations are under police investigation, and Akoijam has sought protection from arrest.
