Fresh riverbank erosion near Tingkhong Bhoga Ali has heightened fears of land loss and damage to homes, prompting officials to inspect the affected area and initiate immediate protection measures
Dibrugarh: Fresh riverbank erosion along the Brahmaputra has triggered alarm in Mohanaghat, near Tingkhong Bhoga Ali in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, with residents fearing extensive land loss and possible damage to nearby homes and infrastructure.
The erosion, intensified by the river’s strong currents, has worsened over the past few days, raising concerns that agricultural land and residential areas could be washed away if immediate measures are not taken.
Following reports of the incident, officials from the district administration visited the affected site to assess the extent of the erosion and oversee preventive measures aimed at containing further damage.
Residents of Aithan village, which has long remained vulnerable to riverbank erosion, said they continue to live under constant threat as the Brahmaputra gradually advances towards their settlement.
“We are living in constant fear because the Brahmaputra’s erosion has become a major threat to our lives. The government has undertaken protection work using geo-bags, but we are uncertain about how effective these measures will be,” said local resident Dev Chouhan. He warned that without timely and durable intervention, the village could face severe destruction in the future.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the recurring challenge of riverbank erosion across Upper Assam during the monsoon, with residents urging the government to implement long-term erosion-control measures to protect lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure.
