The former Congress leader removed the BJP designation from his X profile and said he had decided after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to step away from active politics
New Delhi: BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has reportedly resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing personal reasons, though neither he nor the party has officially confirmed the development.
The reports surfaced after Poonawalla removed the designation “BJP National Spokesperson” from his X profile while retaining the description “Lifelong follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
A lawyer by training, Poonawalla entered national politics with the Congress before publicly questioning the party’s internal presidential election process in 2017, alleging it favoured Rahul Gandhi. He later joined the BJP, where he became one of the party’s most prominent television spokespersons.
In recent weeks, Poonawalla had shared videos suggesting he intended to leave active politics. In one video reposted on Thursday, he said he had decided after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to step away but stayed on to help the BJP during key Assembly elections in West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana, Bihar and Maharashtra. “I had decided in 2024 that I would quit active politics. But I stayed for crucial elections… Now I feel that it is time to move on from active politics,” he said.
Poonawalla is the younger brother of political commentator Tehseen Poonawalla. Neither the BJP nor Shehzad Poonawalla has publicly commented on the reported resignation or his future plans.
