Assam Announces Six-Month Loan Moratorium for Flood-Hit Borrowers in Four District

The relief covers housing, education, vehicles, farm and SHG loans, with repayment schedules set to be extended after the moratorium period

Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a six-month moratorium on loan repayments for flood-affected borrowers in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat, offering financial relief to families, farmers and self-help groups (SHGs) impacted by the recent floods.

The moratorium, effective from July 19, 2026, will apply to borrowers whose loan accounts were classified as standard accounts rather than non-performing assets (NPAs). The relief covers housing, education and vehicle loans, along with farm loans, crop loans and loans availed by SHGs in the four worst-affected districts.

During the six-month period, eligible borrowers will not be required to pay their regular loan instalments. After the moratorium ends, banks will allow repayment tenures to be extended by six months to one year, subject to banking norms and borrowers’ requirements.

The measure is intended to ease the financial burden on people whose homes, farms, businesses and livelihoods were severely affected by the floods.

Earlier, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) had urged the Centre, the Assam government, the Reserve Bank of India and financial institutions to introduce a six-month moratorium on loan repayments and EMIs for flood-affected people.

The party also sought waiver of penal charges during the moratorium period and a special rehabilitation package for affected families, farmers, small entrepreneurs and SHGs.
