Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says over 71,000 people are sheltering in relief camps while 1,690 relief distribution centres are operating round the clock across the state
Guwahti: More than 11.44 lakh people across 25 districts remain affected by floods in Assam, while the death toll has risen to 68, according to the latest flood update released by the state government on Sunday.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said relief operations have been expanded to reach more affected people and areas. “Our relief efforts have expanded to cover more people and areas. Over 71,000 people are safely sheltered in relief camps while 1,690 relief distribution centres are functioning round the clock to assist our people,” he posted on social media.
Official figures show that 2,157 villages across 77 revenue circles remain affected. A total of 215 relief camps are housing 71,223 people, while 29,983 people have been evacuated. The floods have also damaged 1,180 houses fully and 9,926 houses partially, with eight people still reported missing.
Authorities continue rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations as floodwaters impact several districts, particularly in Upper Assam.
