Assam Assembly Unanimously Backs One-Third Reservation for Women in Legislatures

Resolution moved by Minister Ajanta Neog receives unanimous support in the House, backing implementation of women’s quota after delimitation

Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly on May 25 unanimously adopted a resolution supporting one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies after the completion of the delimitation process.

The proposal was introduced by Women and Child Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog during the third day of the first session of the newly constituted Assembly. Members across party lines backed the resolution, signalling broad political support for greater representation of women in governance.

While presenting the resolution, Neog said women continue to face barriers in entering decision-making spaces despite their growing role in society. “Women are not politically empowered enough, not only in India but across the world. Social and educational factors continue to affect participation,” she said in the House.

The resolution called for the immediate implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures once the delimitation exercise is completed. The minister also referred to the women’s reservation legislation introduced by the Centre under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that it would strengthen women’s participation in politics.

Neog further noted that several NDA-ruled states had already adopted similar resolutions. She also highlighted the recent election of Assam’s fifth woman MLA, describing it as a positive indicator for women’s representation in public life.

The resolution is being viewed as a significant political endorsement of expanding women’s role in legislative institutions and public leadership.
